I've been seeing a lot of chatter lately about minimum investment requirements for Gold IRAs, and it got me thinking about my own journey. I started my Gold IRA a few years back, probably around 2020 or 2021 when things were super uncertain with the economy. I’m a healthcare administrator here in Tampa, so I see firsthand how fast things can change, and it really solidified my decision to diversify a chunk of my retirement savings into something tangible.
When I was researching, it felt like every custodian had a different "minimum" – some were outright stated like $25k, $50k, or even $100k, while others were a bit more ambiguous, almost like a "suggested minimum" to make the fees worth it. I ended up converting about $75k from an old 401k to get started, primarily in American Gold Eagles. It just felt like a solid, recognizable asset. I've added to it since then, mostly smaller contributions, and I’m probably sitting somewhere in the $150k-$175k range now, all in physical gold.
My question for the group is, what did you all find? Did you feel pressured by any particular minimums when you opened your account? And for those who started with smaller amounts, say under $50k, how did you find the experience with custodians and their fees? Sometimes I wonder if I started with more than I strictly needed to, even though I'm happy with where I am now. Just curious about others' experiences and if anyone felt like they were getting hit with disproportionately high fees for smaller accounts.
