Just crossed the 5-year mark with my Gold IRA, and thought I’d share some thoughts and numbers for anyone on the fence. I rolled over a decent chunk of an old 401k into a self-directed Gold IRA back in late 2018, just as some of the market tremors were starting to feel a bit too real for my comfort. Went with predominantly American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maples. I’m based out here in Scottsdale, so finding a solid local dealer for my direct purchases was easy, and the IRA custodian process, while a bit clunky at first, smoothed out pretty quickly.
My initial rollover was around $800k, and I’ve DCA’d another $250k into it since then, mostly during 2020 and 2022 dips. Seeing that physical gold in a secure vault, outside the traditional banking system, gives me a peace of mind that frankly, no stock certificate ever has. Call it old-school, but I’ve built my businesses with tangible assets, so this just aligns with my philosophy. I've always viewed this as my ultimate safe-haven play, not a get-rich-quick scheme. The bulk of my 5m+ portfolio is still in real estate and my ventures, but the gold is my bedrock.
Returns-wise, it’s been exactly what I expected, and frankly, a bit better. My average cost basis is somewhere around $1750/oz across all my purchases. With spot prices where they are now ($2300+ as I type this), it's looking pretty good on paper. That's a solid 30%+ gain on the initial portion, not including the DCA. More importantly, it's outperformed the S&P 500 significant during a couple of those volatile years, acting as that true hedge I was looking for. No regrets at all, especially looking at the current geopolitical mess and inflation numbers.
Anyone else hit this kind of milestone? What have your experiences been like? Curious to hear from others who have held for a while. Are you looking to add more or thinking about rebalancing now that prices are up?
