Hard to believe it's been five years since I pulled the trigger on rolling over a chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. I remember feeling pretty good about it at the time, given all the rumblings about inflation and the usual political circus. As a tourism business owner here in Savannah, I'm used to seeing economic cycles firsthand – some years are booming, some are… well, let's just say a little more 'quaint' like our historic squares in August heat. I figured diversifying with some physical gold in an IRA was just another way to weatherproof my portfolio a bit, kinda like having good insurance on my trolleys.
I started with around $120k from an old employer's 401k plan, which felt like a significant chunk of change to move into something less "liquid" than stocks. The process itself was surprisingly straightforward, honestly. The company I went with handled most of the paperwork, and it was a direct rollover, so no tax headaches there which was a relief. My main goal wasn't to get rich overnight – anyone thinking that with gold is probably in for a rude awakening – but to protect against the downside and maintain purchasing power. I'd been through a few downturns where watching my paper assets shrink felt a lot like watching tourists flee during a hurricane warning, and I wanted something more tangible.
So, the big question: returns. Over these five years, my gold IRA has appreciated to roughly $168k. So, that's what, about a 40% gain? Not going to lie, it feels pretty good. It's definitely outpaced some of my more traditional investments in the same timeframe, especially when you factor in some of the market volatility we've seen. More importantly, it feels like a solid, stable foundation. There's a peace of mind that comes with knowing a good portion of my retirement savings isn't entirely tethered to the whims of the stock market or some tech flavor of the month. It’s given me a different perspective on risk management for my total portfolio, which is now sitting closer to the $250k mark.
For those of you who've been around the block with this, what are your thoughts on rebalancing? I haven't really touched it since the initial rollover. Part of me thinks it’s doing its job just sitting there, but another part wonders if I should be trimming or adding depending on market conditions. Also, any other Savannah investors out there who've done a gold IRA? Curious to hear specific local experiences or insights.
