Been seeing a lot of chatter lately, both in the news and here, about inflation ticking up. As someone who's weathered more than a few economic cycles running my tourism business here in Savannah, it’s always on my mind. My portfolio, which is hovering around the $200k mark right now, is heavily weighted in my business and real estate, but I carved out a chunk for a Gold IRA a few years back specifically for this reason.
I started with my Gold IRA about 5 years ago – put in a decent chunk, maybe $50k-ish at first, then added another $20k during a dip. My thinking was always that gold acts as a hedge when everything else goes sideways. During COVID, when travel ground to a halt, it was a weird comfort knowing that part of my nest egg was in something tangible, not just bouncing with the market's mood swings. I don't check it daily, but I get those quarterly statements, and it’s been reassuring to see it hold its own, especially when the dollar seems to be buying less and less at the grocery store.
My question for the group now is, for those of you who are also using gold for inflation protection, are you considering adding more, or are you holding steady? I’m pushing 55, and retirement isn't that far off, so I’m trying to decide if another $10k-$15k into the Gold IRA is a smart move now, or if I should diversify further into other asset classes. I know past performance isn't indicative of future results, blah blah, but interested in hearing real-world takes.
Specifically, has anyone seen their gold IRA significantly outperform other assets during this current inflationary period? Or is it more of a slow and steady kind of protection? Just trying to gauge if I'm on the right track or if there are other strategies I should be looking at. Always good to get some outside perspective from folks who are in similar boats.
