I'm really hoping for some practical advice here from others who've been through this. My husband, bless his heart, set up this Gold IRA for us a few years back, and it's always been at a third-party depository. That's what he was comfortable with, and I didn't question it. Now that he's gone, I’m trying my best to manage things and keep his legacy secure, but honestly, all this talk about home storage has me a bit freaked out.
We're talking about a portfolio around the $75,000 mark here, and the thought of having that much physical gold tucked away in our house in Raleigh... it just feels like a target. I know some of you swear by home storage for the immediate access and control, and I get the appeal of not paying depository fees year after year. But what about security? Like, beyond a typical safe, what do people actually do? The idea of someone breaking in and finding it just makes my stomach churn. My husband was always so meticulous, and I feel this responsibility to protect what he built.
On the flip side, I worry about the depositories too – not necessarily about them being unsafe, but just about handing over control completely. It’s a trust thing, I guess. Are there specific depositories folks here have had really positive experiences with? Or are there home storage solutions that are truly robust enough to deter serious attempts, not just opportunists? I’m trying to weigh the peace of mind of it being somewhere "professional" versus the peace of mind of knowing exactly where it is. Any thoughts or experiences on how you decided, especially if you're holding a similar amount, would be so appreciated right now.
Thanks for listening to my worries. Just trying to make the best decision for our future.
