Okay, so I’ve been helping some of my clients here in SLC with their Gold IRAs, and it's been a pretty eye-opening experience navigating all the options. For me personally, I'm trying to decide between a Roth vs. Traditional Gold IRA for myself and honestly, it’s a tougher call than I thought it would be. I've got around $350k in my overall portfolio right now, and I’m looking to roll over a portion into physical gold, probably around $75k initially.
My thinking for a Roth is obviously the tax-free withdrawals in retirement. With the way things are going, I can't help but feel like taxes are only going to go up. It feels like a strong hedge against future tax rate increases, especially since I expect gold to appreciate nicely over the long term. The idea of not having to pay taxes on what could be substantial gains down the road is super appealing. But then, I’m also pretty comfortable in my current tax bracket, so the upfront tax deduction of a Traditional IRA is really tempting. That deduction could effectively let me invest more now, which is also a big win.
The Traditional side of me sees the immediate tax benefits and thinks, "More money in the market now, compounding quicker." But then I think about withdrawal time and the capital gains on that gold. Ouch. I’ve heard arguments both ways that sound totally legitimate. My clients are all over the map on this too, which isn't helping my own decision!
Anyone here with experience actually doing one over the other? Did you regret your choice later? Are there any hidden pros or cons I’m missing with physical gold specifically in one or the other? Just looking for some real-world input beyond the standard financial advice. Feeling a bit stuck and would love to hear some perspectives.
