Thinking of rolling over some of my Roth to a Gold IRA, specifically eyeing physical gold allocated. Done my due diligence on a couple of custodians, and it seems pretty straightforward, but I'd love to hear from anyone who's actually done this. My primary brokerage is Schwab, and they've been solid for everything else, but this is a different beast.
My current allocation is heavily weighted towards equities, naturally, but with the market being… interesting, to say the least, I'm feeling the need to diversify in a more tangible way. I’m thinking about pulling about $300k-$500k from my Roth and getting it into physical gold. The idea of having a portion of my retirement absolutely un-bail-in-able is increasingly appealing. Managing a family office here in Greenwich, I see the financial tides turning, and frankly, a bit of that old-school hedge against volatility feels prudent.
Has anyone here run into any unexpected issues with the actual transfer process? Any watchouts when dealing with specific custodians or depositories? Are there any hidden fees or gotchas I should be aware of beyond what's explicitly stated in their disclosures? I'm talking about the kind of stuff you only learn after the fact.
Also, to those who've done this, what's your take on the storage options? Segregated vs. unsegregated? I'm leaning heavily towards segregated, even if it carries a slightly higher fee, for peace of mind. But I'm open to arguments otherwise. Appreciate any insights, especially from those who've navigated a direct Roth conversion into a Gold IRA.
