Okay, so I've been doing a deep dive into my Gold IRA setup recently. Got over 5 million in my portfolio, a decent chunk of that in physical metals through a Gold IRA, and I'm always looking to optimise. Based in Aspen, so overheads are always on my mind, even with the portfolio size. I remember setting this up a while back, probably 7-8 years ago, and honestly, I just went with the company my financial advisor recommended without a ton of scrutiny on the fee structure beyond the initial setup.
Now that I'm looking at potential additional metal purchases (especially with how volatile the market's been), I'm really digging into the annual maintenance and storage fees. My current custodian charges me a flat $250 annually for admin, and another $150 for segregated storage. That's $400 a year, which isn't breaking the bank, but when you're dealing with multiple millions, even a fractional percentage difference adds up fast. I'm a real estate developer, so I'm used to negotiating every dime on a deal. Plus, I’ve got some serious heavy metal holdings outside the IRA as well, so I'm pretty familiar with the logistics of holding physical assets.
I've been playing around with a few online tools, including the Retirement Planner on GoldIRA Blueprint, which has been helpful for modelling different scenarios with gold in retirement. It got me thinking about just how much these recurring fees can impact long-term growth, especially if I continue to add to the position. Are there any companies out there offering better rates for higher value portfolios? Or is $400-$500 pretty standard for segregated storage and admin when you're talking about a multi-million dollar Gold IRA?
What are you guys paying for annual maintenance and storage? Any hidden fees I should be looking out for if I start calling around for quotes? I'm curious what everyone else's experience has been with different custodians and how transparent they are upfront about ALL the costs.
