Gold IRA fees: What's everyone seeing out there for comparisons?
- •I've been kicking the tires on a new gold IRA custodian for a chunk of my physical holdings, and honestly, the fee structures are all over the map.
- •I'm seeing everything from flat annual fees of a couple hundred bucks to percentages of assets under management, and it's making my head spin.
- •Storage fees are another killer – some are bundled, some are separate, and the insurance riders are all over the place too.
I've been kicking the tires on a new gold IRA custodian for a chunk of my physical holdings, and honestly, the fee structures are all over the map. I've got a decent sized portfolio, north of 5M across various assets, and the last thing I want is to hemorrhage cash on unnecessary fees just because I didn't do my due diligence. My current setup is mostly in direct metal holdings and some real estate development projects here in Aspen, but I'm looking to diversify a bit more into the IRA space.
My existing custodian has been pretty straightforward, but I'm thinking of moving another 500k-1M into a new gold IRA and want to make sure I'm not getting hosed. I'm seeing everything from flat annual fees of a couple hundred bucks to percentages of assets under management, and it's making my head spin. Storage fees are another killer – some are bundled, some are separate, and the insurance riders are all over the place too. Fidelity and Schwab are easy for stocks, but precious metals custodians feel like a whole different beast.
What are you all finding for transparent comparisons? Are there any hidden fees I need to be explicitly asking about? I'm talking about things like setup fees, transaction fees if I want to rebalance, or even liquidation fees down the line. It's a long-term play for me, obviously, so annual costs add up significantly over a decade or two, especially with the amounts I'm considering.
Any recommendations for custodians that have clear, competitive fees for larger accounts? Or conversely, any companies to absolutely avoid due to nickel-and-diming? Specifically interested in experiences with segregated vs. commingled storage and the cost difference there. I usually prefer segregated for peace of mind, but if the cost is astronomical, it might make me reconsider for a portion.
