I've been consolidating a few older retirement accounts into a self-directed Gold IRA lately, mostly 401ks from earlier ventures. I've got a decent chunk now in physical gold and silver, probably north of 5M in precious metals total across all accounts, but mostly in these new IRAs. Based out of Scottsdale, and honestly, the market's been a ride, but PMs have been my steady Eddies through it all.
I’m diving deep into the fee structures, and it’s a jungle out there. Some companies tout "low fees" but then you get hit with a bunch of nickel and dime charges for storage, administration, insurance, wire transfers, you name it. Others have a higher upfront fee but then fewer recurring costs. I’m especially looking at segregated vs. co-mingled storage and the cost difference there. With the value of my holdings, a few basis points here and there really add up over time. I’m talking about thousands of dollars annually, not chump change.
I’ve used a couple of different custodians for various parts of my portfolio, and while I'm generally happy with the service, I'm always looking to optimize. I'm especially keen to hear from others with substantial holdings – what are your go-to companies for Gold IRAs? Are you seeing similar fee structures, or have you found some hidden gems with better rates? I'm currently looking at a few different options, but the transparency around all potential costs can be a bit murky.
What are your average annual fees looking like as a percentage of your total precious metal IRA value? And beyond the numbers, how has your experience been with customer service and ease of transactions? Any insights, especially regarding custodians that excel in transparency and efficient operations, would be hugely appreciated. Trying to make sure I’m not leaving money on the table for essentially the same service.
