I've been running a jewelry store here in Providence for over 20 years, so I thought I knew gold inside and out. But setting up my Gold IRA earlier this year really opened my eyes to how many different fees are out there. I finally got around to transferring about $75k from an old 401k – mostly into American Gold Eagles and some Perth Mint Kangaroos. I swear, trying to compare the fee structures between different companies was like trying to read another language. All the storage fees, setup fees, transaction fees… it felt endless.
I ended up going with a company that charges a flat annual storage fee, which I preferred over a percentage. Given my background, I'm pretty comfortable with the markup on the metals themselves, but those ongoing fees really add up over time. My custodian charges a flat $150 per year for segregated storage, which seems pretty reasonable from what I gathered. I also had a small setup fee, I think it was around $50, but nothing too crazy. I did not want to get hit with high transaction fees every time I wanted to adjust my holdings. That was a big selling point for who I chose.
I’m curious what other people have experienced with fees. Did anyone find a company with genuinely low fees across the board, or is it always a trade-off? I used that Gold IRA Calculator last month to project what my portfolio might look like in 5-10 years, and even small differences in fees can make a pretty big impact on the overall value. It really highlighted why digging into those numbers is so important.
Have any of you changed Gold IRA companies specifically because of fees? Was it worth the hassle? I’m always looking to optimize, especially with the way the economy feels right now. Would appreciate any insights!
