Gold IRA Fees - My experience and what to watch out for

Okay, so I've been doing a pretty deep dive into the fees associated with my Gold IRA, especially as I'm thinking about potentially consolidating or at least getting a clearer picture of what I'm actually paying. Currently, I've got a decent chunk of my portfolio (around 10-15% of my 800k total) in precious metals, split between a couple of different companies to diversify a bit, but also because I started with one and added another later. I’m a doctor here in Boston, so my time is precious, and I really want to make sure I’m not overpaying for something that’s supposed to be a long-term hedge against inflation and market volatility.
My initial thought was that the storage fees were the main thing to watch, and for a while, I felt pretty good with a flat annual fee rather than a percentage. But I'm starting to realize there's a lot more to it. There are account setup fees, transaction fees if you're buying or selling within the IRA, and even wire transfer fees! It really adds up, and it's frustrating because some of this stuff isn't always super transparent on the initial sales calls. I remember feeling a bit rushed to get things set up a few years ago, and I probably didn't press enough on every single potential charge.
For those of you who have multiple Gold IRAs or have switched providers, what did you find to be the most surprising or hidden fees? Are there any companies out there that have truly transparent, all-inclusive pricing? I’m particularly interested in hearing about flat-fee structures versus percentage-based, and at what portfolio size one starts to dramatically outweigh the other. I'm wondering if I should be pushing for better terms with my current custodians or if it's worth the hassle of a full rollover.
I’m also curious about the spread on the metals themselves. I know that’s not strictly an IRA fee, but it directly impacts the real value you’re getting. Has anyone done a serious comparison of the bid-ask spread between the major players? It feels like nickel-and-diming sometimes, and I'd love to hear if others have felt the same. My biggest fear is looking back in 10-15 years and realizing a significant portion of my precious metals gains were eaten away by fees and spreads.
