So, I finally pulled the trigger and started my Gold IRA! Super excited to get some physical metal into my retirement portfolio, especially with all the crazy stuff happening in the world. I'm a teacher here in Columbus, so every penny counts, and I'm starting small – only transferred about $10k from an old 403b, which felt like a big step. I chose Augusta Precious Metals after doing some online digging, and honestly, they seemed pretty straightforward.
My main question is about fees. I'm trying to wrap my head around all the different charges – storage, setup, maintenance, shipping, etc. With Augusta, I'm looking at $225 annually, broken down as $100 for storage and $125 for admin. They waived my first-year fees, which was a nice bonus and definitely helped me make the decision, but I'm looking ahead. Are these pretty standard rates? I've seen some companies advertising lower, but then you dig into the fine print and there are all these hidden costs. I'm trying to optimize this thing for the long haul, even with my relatively small initial investment.
I've seen some posts here where folks are talking about really low fees, but then they usually have much larger portfolios than me. For someone starting with less than $50k, what kind of fee structure should I realistically expect? I'm trying to figure out if I should be shopping around more aggressively, or if what I've got with Augusta is pretty competitive for my situation. Any red flags to watch out for, or particular companies that have surprisingly low fees without hidden gotchas? I'm feeling a little overwhelmed by all the choices and just want to make sure I'm doing this right.
