So I just opened my first Gold IRA, pretty pumped about getting a head start on retirement planning here in Charleston. I'm still super early in my investing journey – my current total portfolio value across everything is probably only about $30k, most of that in my 401k. I decided to dip my toes into physical gold for the diversification, especially with all the market volatility lately. My main thought process was checking out that "Gold vs Stocks Comparison" tool (specifically the 10-year chart at https://goldvsstocks.goldirablueprint.com/?period=10Y) and seeing how gold really holds its own, sometimes even outperforming stocks during certain periods. It just made me feel a bit more secure having some of my eggs in that basket.
My biggest hurdle right now is picking a custodian. My first thought was just to go with whoever my precious metals dealer recommended, but honestly, I want to do my own due diligence before committing. I've heard horror stories about fees eating into returns, or just really unresponsive customer service. For someone like me who's just starting out and only has a few thousand in gold right now (but hoping to add more consistently over the years), low fees and good communication are HUGE.
Anyone here have custodians they absolutely love, or conversely, ones they'd tell me to run away from? I'm looking for ones that are transparent about their fee structure, have decent online portals to view holdings, and just generally make the process smooth. I'm not looking for anything super complex, just a solid, reliable partner for the long haul. Any specific Charleston-area recommendations or warnings would be a bonus, but honestly, nationwide experiences are super helpful too.
What are your experiences with Gold IRA custodians, especially for smaller portfolios? Are there any particular questions I should be asking when I'm interviewing them? Really appreciate any insights!
