Gold IRA Custodian Fees - What's a "normal" range to expect?

    Key Takeaways
    • Okay, so I'm about three months into my Gold IRA journey, and frankly, I'm still figuring a lot of this out.
    • I moved about $75k from an old 401k into a self-directed IRA and then into physical gold (mostly coins, a few bars).
    • My current custodian is charging me roughly $250 a year for storage and administration.
    The 3-step rollover process explained

Okay, so I'm about three months into my Gold IRA journey, and frankly, I'm still figuring a lot of this out. I moved about $75k from an old 401k into a self-directed IRA and then into physical gold (mostly coins, a few bars). The whole process was smoother than I expected, but now I'm looking at my first quarterly statement from the custodian, and I just want to make sure I'm not getting hosed on fees.

My current custodian is charging me roughly $250 a year for storage and administration. This is for segregated storage, which my Gold IRA specialist said was important for peace of mind. It felt reasonable at the time – I mean, securing $75k of physical gold isn't going to be free, right? But now I'm seeing some other companies online talking about fees as low as $180 or even a flat $225 for portfolios up to $100k or $200k. I know a lot of these fees are tiered based on your total assets, which makes sense.

I'm a small business owner here in Denver, and every dollar counts. While $250 isn't breaking the bank, if I can get the same level of security and service for less, I'd obviously prefer that. My main concern is reliability and making sure my assets are safe. Is there a "normal" range for these fees? Should I be looking to switch custodians already, or is $250 for a $75k portfolio (segregated storage) pretty standard? Any insights, especially from folks with similar-sized portfolios, would be hugely helpful. What are you guys paying?

Hey, I hear you on the fees. I went through a similar thing about a year ago. Rolled over an old 401k into a Gold IRA and felt pretty good about it until I saw the first statement. Not gonna lie, it was a bit of a gut punch figuring out what was "normal."

I ended up shopping around a bit more after that first year. Turns out there's a pretty wide range, and some custodians are definitely better about transparency than others. Good luck sorting it out!

Hey, glad to hear the transfer went smoothly! Sounds like you've made some solid moves. Just out of curiosity, when you say "physical gold (mostly coins, a few bars)", are we talking about IRS-approved metals like American Gold Eagles or Canadian Maple Leafs, or something else?

Honestly, "normal" is a bit of a moving target with IRA fees, especially with gold. It really depends on who you go with and if they're charging a flat fee or a percentage. For $75k, I'd say anything under $200-$250 annually is pretty reasonable if it's a flat fee. If they're charging a percentage, you might start to feel it more as your holdings grow.

I'd also look closely at what that fee covers. Is it just storage, or are there transaction fees baked in for when you eventually rebalance or sell? Sometimes the lower headline fee hides other charges. Just something to keep an eye on!

Hey, glad to hear your rollover went smoothly! That's a huge hurdle for many. Regarding custodian fees, it really varies, but you're probably looking at anywhere from $75-$300 annually for admin fees, plus storage which can be another $100-$200+. It often depends on the value of your holdings, with some custodians having tiered pricing.

Here's a decent breakdown that might help you compare and see if your current fees are in line: https://www.goldiraservicereviews.com/gold-ira-fees-cost-comparison/
