Gold IRA Custodian Experiences – Is Mine the Only One Like This?

Okay, so I’ve been sitting on this for a bit, but honestly, I'm getting a little frustrated with my gold IRA custodian, or maybe it's just the nature of the beast? I’ve got about $180k in a self-directed gold IRA, mostly in Eagles and some Canadian Maples, which I set up about 3 years ago. As an accountant here in Atlanta, I went into this fully understanding the tax advantages and the long-term hedge against inflation, especially with everything going on in the world. I chose a custodian that seemed to have good reviews on a few financial blogs I trust, and their fee structure looked reasonable at the time – a flat annual fee, which I thought would be better than a percentage.
The issue isn't really with the storage or the security; it's more about communication and just how… slow everything feels. When I initially funded it, the process took longer than I expected to get everything squared away, even with me being on top of all the paperwork and wire transfers. More recently, I was considering rebalancing a tiny portion of my regular brokerage account into some more physical silver rounds for the IRA, just to diversify a bit within the precious metals space. The thought of adding silver rounds appealed to me for their lower premium over spot compared to coins, for stacking value. Anyway, I reached out to my custodian with some questions about integrating silver rounds into my existing account, and it took almost a week for a substantive response, which then just directed me to a general FAQ. Am I expecting too much, or is this par for the course with gold IRA custodians?
I guess I'm just wondering if others have had similar experiences, or if I should start looking elsewhere. I'm hesitant to move everything because of the potential fees and the hassle. The tax benefits are crystal clear, but the practical side of managing this account is turning out to be more clunky than I anticipated. For those of you with gold IRAs, especially if you hold gold rounds or even just mixed precious metals, what are your custodians like? Any recommendations for more responsive services, especially for someone in Georgia? I'm open to hearing about both large, established players and perhaps smaller, more personalized options if they exist and are reputable. I just want to feel like my questions are being addressed by a human who understands my account, not just a boilerplate email. Thanks in advance for any insights!
