Alright, so I’ve been heavily into precious metals for a while now, probably close to 20 years. Most of my non-real estate portfolio (which is in the 7-figure range, not to humble brag, just for context) has a solid chunk allocated to physical gold and silver, both in my Gold IRA and held personally in various vaults. My Gold IRA itself is sitting pretty at around $1.8M right now. For the past decade, I've been with Augusta Precious Metals as my custodian, and overall, it's been... fine. They’re responsive enough when I call, and statements are generally on time. The fees, well, they're fees, you know? Never seen one I liked.
My main gripe, and maybe it's just me having too much time on my hands now that I'm retired in Palm Beach, is that I feel like I'm just a number. When I first signed up, it felt a bit more personal, but now it's just very transactional. I’m wondering if this is typical for Gold IRA custodians once your account gets to a certain size, or if I just had an unrealistic expectation. I’m used to a higher level of service from my financial advisor on the equity side, and even my real estate lawyer.
So, I'm thinking about exploring other options. Has anyone here had a genuinely great experience with a Gold IRA custodian, particularly with a larger account? I'm talking about a custodian who offers more than just the bare minimum – maybe more proactive communication, clearer fee structures, or better insights into the storage options. I'm not chasing the absolute lowest fee, but a better overall service package would be highly appealing. I've heard some whispers about Equity Trust and Kingdom Trust, but solid first-hand accounts are always more valuable.
What are your thoughts? Is it even worth the hassle of transferring such a substantial account, or should I just accept that this is the norm in the metals world? Any specific recommendations or warnings would be genuinely appreciated. I'm not looking for sales pitches, just honest feedback from fellow investors.
