Eagles vs. Buffalos for my Gold IRA - What's everyone's take?

    The 3-step rollover process explained

I've been kicking this around for a while now for my Gold IRA, and I'd love to hear some diverse opinions. I'm sitting on about $75,000 worth of gold in my IRA right now, mostly a mix of Eagles I picked up a few years back when I first started this whole gold journey. I'm looking to add another $10-15k soon and trying to decide if I should stick with American Gold Eagles or finally jump into the American Gold Buffalo camp.

My thinking has always been that the Eagles are the most recognizable, and therefore, potentially the most liquid if I ever needed to sell quickly. Being a small-town mayor here in Boise, I'm all about community and knowing what folks trust. The fractional options on the Eagles also seemed appealing for some flexibility down the line. But I've been seeing more and more chatter lately about the Buffalos and their 24k purity. Is that purity really a big deal for long-term hold in an IRA? Are potential buyers that concerned about the minor copper content in the Eagles, or is it more of a purist thing?

I'm generally a pretty conservative investor, especially with my retirement savings. I'm looking at this as a hedge against inflation and a way to diversify, not to make a quick buck. I ran through that Gold IRA Quiz over at quiz.goldirablueprint.com/?forum the other day, and it was a helpful refresher, but it didn't really settle my internal debate on this specific coin choice. What are your experiences? Have any of you had better luck with one over the other when it comes to resale or just overall peace of mind?

Really appreciate any insights you all can offer. It’s always good to hear from folks who have been in the trenches a bit longer or just have a different perspective on things. Thanks in advance!

Oh man, I went through this exact same internal debate when I first started my gold IRA! Honestly, I ended up with a mix of both. Started with mostly Eagles for the familiarity, but then added some Buffalos when I found a good deal. No regrets either way, they're both solid for the IRA. Sounds like you're in a good spot already!

Interesting. You mentioned you primarily have Eagles right now. Are you thinking of diversifying into Buffalos, or just debating what to acquire next once you hit a certain value threshold?

Honestly, for an IRA, isn't the real play just getting a good price per ounce regardless of the coin? Eagles and Buffalos are both good, but you're not exactly displaying them in a museum. The premium is what matters. If you can get Buffalos for a lower premium per ounce, why not go with those?
