Finally convinced the wife about gold for our IRA - huge relief!

Okay, so this has been a journey. My wife has always been pretty conservative with our investments, mostly sticking to index funds and a few blue-chip stocks. Which, I get it, has been solid for us, especially with my tech ventures here in Austin taking off. We've built up a decent portfolio, probably in the high six figures nearing seven, but as everyone's seen, the market lately... man, it's just got me on edge. Every time I open a news app, it’s a new headline about inflation, interest rates, or some geopolitical drama. I’ve been researching gold IRAs for about a year now, convinced we needed some real diversification, something less correlated to the stock market rollercoaster.
My argument was always that it's a hedge, a safe haven when everything else goes sideways. I'd show her historical charts, explain how it holds value, especially with all the money printing happening. She just wasn't buying it. Her main hang-up was liquidity and the idea of "physical gold" feeling a bit old-school and clunky compared to our slick online brokerage accounts. Plus, she thought it was just for doomsday preppers, which honestly, some of my early research probably didn't help disabuse her of that notion. I even brought up how I'd heard about other tech founders in Austin moving some of their personal wealth into hard assets as a buffer – that didn't quite land either.
The breakthrough actually came from a mutual friend of ours, someone we both really respect, who mentioned casually over dinner that he'd just diversified a portion of his retirement into a gold IRA. He didn't preach, just talked about his own comfort level and why it made sense for his portfolio given the current economic climate. Something about hearing it from someone external, someone she trusted, just clicked for her. It wasn't me, her slightly more risk-tolerant (read: sometimes impulsive) entrepreneur husband, but a third party reinforcing the same concept.
Honestly felt like a huge weight lifted. We decided to roll over about 10-15% of our IRA into physical gold. It's not a huge chunk, but it feels like a significant step towards truly diversifying and protecting what we've built. The process of setting it up was surprisingly straightforward – my only regret is not pushing harder sooner, or maybe finding that mutual friend sooner! Anyone else have similar experiences convincing a skeptical spouse about gold or other alternative investments?
