Five years into my Gold IRA and feeling pretty good about
- •Hard to believe it's been five years since I rolled a significant chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA.
- •My initial allocation was roughly 25% of my overall liquid assets, which at the time was around $800k.
- •I’m based in NYC, and the whole "don't put all your eggs in one basket" mantra meant something to me even when I was deep in equities.
Hard to believe it's been five years since I rolled a significant chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. As a retiree from the Street, watching market volatility these last few years has honestly been easier on the blood pressure knowing I’ve got a solid hedge. My portfolio is heavy in metals – always has been, even back in the day, but having this portion in physical gold, tucked away and out of reach of algorithmic trading nonsense, is a different kind of peace of mind.
My initial allocation was roughly 25% of my overall liquid assets, which at the time was around $800k. I’m based in NYC, and the whole "don't put all your eggs in one basket" mantra meant something to me even when I was deep in equities. Looking back at the numbers, that initial $800k is sitting pretty close to $1.2M now, factoring in both appreciation and the hedging benefits during downturns. The gains haven't been straight-line, obviously, but the overall trajectory has significantly outperformed my more conservative bond allocations, and frankly, some of the S&P returns when you factor in inflation.
I know some folks on here are all about growth stocks and crypto, and more power to them. But for someone in my position, past the accumulation phase, preservation and real wealth protection are paramount. The stability gold offers, particularly when geopolitical tensions flare or the Fed starts hinting at… well, anything, really… it’s invaluable. There’s a psychological comfort to it that you just don't get from staring at a flickering ticker symbol.
I’m curious to hear from others who have been in their Gold IRA for a similar timeframe. What have your experiences been? Any surprises, good or bad? And for those considering it, what are your biggest hesitations? I’m always open to different perspectives, even if my own convictions are pretty strong at this point.
