Man, I'm starting to wonder if I'm getting absolutely fleeced on fees with my Gold IRA. I rolled over about $180k from my old 401k into a Gold IRA about 2 years ago, mainly for the tax benefits and some diversification away from the stock market roller coaster. As an accountant here in Atlanta, I get the tax advantages of precious metals in a retirement account, but the ongoing storage and admin fees are really starting to bug me.
I went with a company that was pretty aggressive with their marketing, and while the initial setup was smooth, looking at my statements now, I'm seeing a $250 annual storage fee and another $150 for administrative services. That's $400 a year for essentially holding my gold. When I look at the percentage of my portfolio, it feels disproportionately high. That's 0.22% of my original $180k, and it's actually a bit higher now that gold prices have moved up a bit.
Are these fees standard? I've seen some companies advertising "free storage for life" or "no annual fees," but I'm always suspicious of those gimmicks. Has anyone here done a deep dive comparison of Gold IRA fees across different custodians? What's a reasonable range for a portfolio of my size? I'm debating whether it's worth it to even consider transferring custodians, but the thought of another round of paperwork and potential transfer fees makes my head spin.
Any advice or company recommendations (or warnings!) would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to make sure I'm maximizing my returns, and minimizing these recurring costs is a big part of that. Let me know what your experiences have been like.
