Thought I'd share some thoughts on my silver journey, for anyone just getting started or curious. It's been about five years now since I really started putting serious money into physical silver, mostly through an IRA. Came into some money after selling a property over on Maui, and with my military retirement already established, I was looking for something tangible, something that felt more secure than just stocks and bonds right now. Ended up rolling about $200k into a Gold IRA, with a decent chunk of that specifically allocated to silver.
My strategy from the start was pretty simple: accumulate during dips, hold for the long term. I'm not trying to flip these coins next year. This is generational wealth, or at least a significant hedge against the kind of currency instability I’ve seen play out in other parts of the world. Living out here in the Pacific, you get a different perspective on global economics, I think. We're so reliant on shipping, on global trade, and when things get shaky, those supply chains get disrupted fast. That's always in the back of my mind when I'm looking at my portfolio.
I've focused mostly on American Silver Eagles and Canadian Maple Leafs for their liquidity and recognition, but I've also picked up a decent amount of 10oz and 100oz bars from reputable mints. The premiums can sting, especially on the Eagles, but I guess you pay for that peace of mind and easier resale. Storage is something I thought a lot about too – went with a segregated vault service through my IRA provider, figured that was safer than trying to dig a hole in my backyard here in Honolulu. Plus, with the amount I'm holding, insurance was a must.
Anyone else here feel like the premiums lately have been a bit wild? Or is that just the new normal? Curious to hear how others are handling the higher premiums on physical vs. just buying SLV or something similar. For me, it's about the physical possession, not just exposure to the price, but sometimes I question if I'm overpaying.
