Just hit my five-year mark with my Gold IRA, and man, it's been an interesting ride. I opened it back in 2019, right before all the crazy started. I'm a government employee here in Albuquerque, and I was really looking for something to supplement my pension down the line. Watched a lot of those commercials and did my own research for a while, figured diversifying out of just stocks and bonds made a lot of sense. Started with about $60k, rolling over an old 401k, and added another $15k or so over the next couple of years as I could, mostly into physical gold but dabbling a bit in silver for some extra 'oomph'.
There were definitely times I felt kinda stupid, especially when gold dipped a bit. You see your statements and start second-guessing everything. My wife was a bit skeptical too, asking if this was just some old-timer conspiracy theory thing. But honestly, seeing the current geopolitical stuff and the inflation we've had? I'm feeling a lot more confident. My original $60k is sitting closer to $85k now, and that's not even counting the extra contributions. It's not like I'm a millionaire, but it's a solid 40% jump on just the initial investment, and that's not too shabby for something that just sits there.
The peace of mind has been a big factor too. Knowing I've got something tangible, not just numbers on a screen, that feels good. Especially during election years and all the talk about the dollar. It’s a small part of my overall retirement picture, but it’s the part I worry about the least right now. I actually ended up moving some of my newer contributions more into silver this past year, thinking there's more upside there percentage-wise for smaller amounts.
Anyone else hit a similar milestone recently? What kind of returns are you guys seeing over a 5-year period or so? And for those who have been in longer, any regrets or things you wish you'd done differently early on? Always curious to hear other people's experiences.
