Hard to believe it's been five years since I first opened my Gold IRA. As someone who spent decades on Wall Street, I was always a bit of a contrarian when it came to traditional investment advice, especially after seeing so many bubbles burst. Started with a significant chunk – around $800k in physical gold coins, mostly Eagles and Maple Leafs, rolled over from an old 401k. Wanted genuine security, something tangible. My wife thought I was nuts, but after watching the markets these past few years, she's starting to come around.
The first couple of years were a bit flat, I'll admit. Had a few moments where I wondered if I'd made the right call, especially with all the noise about tech stocks. But I stuck to my guns. The real action started in the last two years, particularly with inflation ticking up and all the geopolitical instability. Seen my initial investment climb to roughly $1.15 million. Not going to lie, it feels good to see those numbers. It’s not the explosive growth you see in some high-volatility sectors, but for me, at this stage of life, it's about preserving wealth and having a bedrock foundation.
I know some folks on here only look at paper gains, but for me, the peace of mind is worth more than any quarterly report. Living here in NYC, there's always an underlying hum of financial anxiety for some, but I sleep pretty soundly knowing a good portion of my retirement isn't tied to the latest P/E ratios or some Fed announcement. I've considered adding some platinum or silver, but frankly, I just love the simplicity and historical resilience of gold. What are your thoughts on diversifying within precious metals in an IRA?
