Okay, so after months of looking into it, I finally pulled the trigger and opened a Gold IRA. I’m a government employee here in Albuquerque, and with my pension, I really wanted something else outside of the market to shore up my retirement. I'm not looking to get rich quick, just protect my savings, especially with all the inflation talk these days. My initial plan is to roll over about $60k from an old 401k into it. It’s not a massive amount, but it’s a big chunk for me, and I’m feeling a mix of excitement and a little bit of nerves.
I’ve been eyeing Augusta Precious Metals pretty hard. Their reviews seem solid, and their educational approach really appealed to me. I like the idea of understanding what I’m doing rather than just being told what to do. Has anyone here worked with them for their first Gold IRA? What was your experience like with their setup process and fees? Any unexpected surprises? I'm open to other recommendations too, but they're currently at the top of my list.
My biggest concern right now is probably the liquidity aspect down the road, although I'm looking at this as a very long-term hold, likely 10+ years. I'm also wondering if there are any specific types of gold coins or bars that tend to be better for a Gold IRA in terms of premium or future resale. Is it generally better to stick to the more common, recognized coins like American Gold Eagles, or are there other options worth considering?
Any advice from seasoned Gold IRA investors, especially those who started with a similar portfolio size, would be greatly appreciated. What did you wish you knew when you first started? What are the biggest mistakes to avoid? Thanks in advance!
