First-timer here - Gold IRA for rounds, what am I missing?
- •Alright, so I’ve been in the gold game for close to 15 years now, mostly physical stacked in my safe here in Dallas.

Alright, so I’ve been in the gold game for close to 15 years now, mostly physical stacked in my safe here in Dallas. My portfolio is sitting comfortably between $500k and $1M, primarily thanks to my years in oil giving me the capital to invest smart. I’ve always been a believer in tangible assets, especially with all the digital funny money floating around these days. Up until now, I’ve kept my gold outside of an IRA, preferring direct control. My buddy from the oil patch just set up his Gold IRA, and it’s got me seriously considering it for a portion of my holdings, specifically gold rounds.
My main question is around the logistics and gotchas for a Gold IRA with rounds. I’m thinking about rolling over about $100k-$150k from an old 401k sitting idle. My buddy went with American Hartford, but I’m doing my due diligence. Are there any specific pitfalls when it comes to storing rounds in an IRA? What are the common fees that really sting if you’re not paying attention? I’m used to buying 1oz rounds off Kitco or SD Bullion, but the IRA structure adds a layer I'm not familiar with.
I’m also curious about custodian choices for rounds. Is there one that stands out for lower fees or better service when it comes to less common items like gold rounds (as opposed to just standard American Eagles or Canadian Maples)? And for those of you who have moved a significant portion of your portfolio this way, did you notice any long-term headaches that weren't obvious upfront? I’m trying to avoid any surprises down the road.
