Alright, so I've been kicking around the idea of a Gold IRA for a while now. Been in dairy my whole life, know my way around a balance sheet, but this precious metals stuff is a whole different pasture. I've got a good chuck of my 401k sitting there, probably around $600k-$700k, and with all the talk about inflation and the economy going sideways, I'm seriously considering rolling a portion of it into physical gold. Thinking something like $100k-$150k to start, just to diversify and give me some peace of mind.
My biggest hang-up is all the fees. Setup fees, storage fees, maintenance fees – it feels like everyone's got their hand out. I'm based here in Madison, WI, and while I've been doing some research online, I'm not sure what a "reasonable" fee structure even looks like. Are there any hidden costs I should be looking out for? And what about the rollover process itself? Is it a pain in the rear, or pretty straightforward?
Also, any recommendations on reputable custodians or dealers for someone in my situation? I'm looking for trustworthiness and transparency above all else. I don't need fancy bells and whistles, just a solid, reliable company that won't try to pull a fast one. Any practical advice from folks who've actually done this would be hugely appreciated.
