Just closed on a new development out by Snowmass so I'm sitting on a decent chunk of change that I'm looking to diversify further. Most of my capital’s tied up in real estate and I've been eyeing a Gold IRA for a while now. I inherited some physical bullion from my grandfather back in ‘08 – that stuff saved my ass during the recession – so I’m a firm believer in the power of precious metals. Always had a soft spot for the shiny stuff, but an IRA is a whole different beast.
I’m looking to drop about $500k into this thing initially. I've been doing some research, mostly through sources like Goldco and Augusta, and they sound pretty solid. The whole tax-advantaged growth really appeals to me for legacy planning. My kids are already set up with trusts, but I want to make sure their kids are too. I’m leaning towards a rollover from an old 401k that's been sitting dormant, earning paltry returns. What are the common gotchas people run into during the rollover process? Are there any hidden fees or timelines I should be aware of?
Also, I’m seeing a lot of talk about different metals – gold, silver, even platinum and palladium. I'm obviously bullish on gold, but does it make sense to diversify within the precious metals space itself? Or should I just stick to what I know and dump it all into gold? For those of you with significant holdings, have you noticed any real difference in long-term performance across the various metals? Any Aspen locals here who've done this? Would love to hear your experiences with local brokers or storage options.
