First-time Gold IRA buyer – I've been there, here's my take and what I wished I knew

Okay, so I see a lot of posts from folks diving into their first Gold IRA, and it brings me back to when I was making that leap. My portfolio was around the $300k mark back then, mostly 401k and some other investments, and I felt this growing unease about the market. This was maybe 5 years ago, and coming from a banking background (I was a branch manager for a while here in Portland), I’d seen enough cycles to know that "diversification" often ended up meaning "more of the same paper assets."
My biggest piece of advice: don't rush. Seriously. Everyone's screaming about "buy now!" but it's about making an informed decision for your financial future. I spent a good three months researching custodians, metals dealers, and the whole rollover process. One thing I wish I'd known more about upfront were the tax implications – that rollover can be tricky if you're not careful. I actually ended up using a Tax Calculator tool I found online (wish I’d had it earlier!) to really understand how my specific situation would play out. It really helped clarify the tax impact of moving funds from my old 401k into the new Gold IRA without penalties.
Beyond the tax stuff, think hard about storage. Are you comfortable with segregated storage, or pooled? What are the fees for each? And for the love of all that is financially sound, get a clear breakdown of ALL fees upfront – setup, annual, storage, transaction, everything. I pushed hard for transparency and still felt like there were some hidden costs I unearthed later. No one likes surprises when it comes to their hard-earned money. I’m a huge advocate for physical metal diversification in an IRA, especially these days, but you have to walk into it eyes wide open.
What are some of the biggest concerns you all have right now as first-time buyers? And for those who've been in it a while like me, what's a piece of advice you wish you'd gotten?
