Alright, so my nephew is finally looking into a Gold IRA, and he's been peppering me with questions. He’s got about $150k he’s looking to roll over from a traditional IRA – mostly index funds he’s been sitting on since his late 20s. I’ve been heavily allocated in metals for decades, especially since retiring from the Street in '08, but the landscape for first-time buyers seems to have shifted, even if the fundamentals haven't. What are the current pitfalls to watch out for?
I told him the usual: understand storage fees, read the fine print on buybacks (some of those spreads are criminal), and don't get caught up in the fear-mongering from some of these 'investment' companies. He’s in his early 40s, wife and two kids, good income – this isn’t his entire nest egg, but it’s a significant chunk he wants to diversify away from equities and hold long-term. My own setup has been pretty stable for years here in NYC, so I might be a little out of touch on the initial setup process for someone younger.
Any recent experiences with specific custodians that stand out for good service or, conversely, to avoid like the plague? Are there any new regulations or tax implications beyond the standard IRA rules that he needs to be aware of? I’m pushing him towards physical gold and silver, nothing exotic, but I know some of these firms try to upsell ‘collectible’ coins with huge premiums. What’s the temperature check on those these days?
