Okay, so I've been lurking for a while, and finally feel like I have something halfway decent to contribute. For years, I just kept stacking, you know? Started my Gold IRA back in 2017, just after I sold off that little import-export gig I had running between here in El Paso and Ciudad Juarez. Had about $150k in the bank from that, and decided to roll a good chunk of it – around $80k – into physical gold via a Gold IRA. My dad always said to put some iron in the fire, and after seeing a few cycles of the peso go sideways, I was all in on something tangible.
My initial motivation was pure diversification and a hedge against the kind of borderland economic jitters we often feel down here. It wasn't about getting rich quick; it was about not getting poor quick, if that makes sense. For a long time, it just... sat there. Price went up a bit, then down a bit, mostly just tracked inflation. My regular stock portfolio was doing its thing, and I'll admit, sometimes I wondered if I was being too conservative with the gold. But then 2020 hit, and things really started getting spicy. And not the good kind of spicy from my favorite carne asada truck.
Fast forward to today, and my initial $80k is now comfortably over $130k. That's a solid 62% return in about seven years. It might not sound like "get rich" money to some of the crypto bros out there, but for someone like me, who values stability and generational wealth, it feels like a massive win. I mean, my kid's college fund just got a nice boost without me lifting a finger, just by being patient. It wasn't a smooth ride, don't get me wrong. There were definitely moments I second-guessed myself, especially when the narratives around gold were all doomsaying or dismissive.
Anyone else in a similar boat, just patiently holding and starting to see some real upside from their precious metals? I've been doing some research lately, trying to decide if I should rebalance a bit or just keep letting it ride. I found this cool tool called "Silver vs Stocks" at https://silvervsstocks.goldirablueprint.com/?period=10Y that compares silver's performance against the stock market over different periods, and it’s making me think about adding some silver to my IRA mix. What are your thoughts on silver as a next step, especially for someone who's already got a decent gold position? Curious to hear some other perspectives.
