    🥈 Silver IRA

Finally rolled over some of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. Feeling good about it.

    Key Takeaways
    • Been meaning to do this for a while, just finally got around to pulling the trigger.
    • Had about $300k sitting in a legacy 401k from a previous gig (before I landed my current gig in bourbon, bless my lucky stars).
    • It was doing okay, but honestly, with all the market volatility and just general uncertainty, I wasn't sleeping as soundly as I used to.

Been meaning to do this for a while, just finally got around to pulling the trigger. Had about $300k sitting in a legacy 401k from a previous gig (before I landed my current gig in bourbon, bless my lucky stars). It was doing okay, but honestly, with all the market volatility and just general uncertainty, I wasn't sleeping as soundly as I used to. Call me old-fashioned, but I value stability.

My old man always said, "Son, some things just hold their value." He bought his first piece of land back in '68 and held onto it through thick and thin, ended up being the smartest move he ever made. That attitude always resonated with me, especially working in an industry where heritage and long-term vision are everything. So I started looking into tangible assets, and gold kept coming up. Not to mention, I felt like I was a little too tech-heavy without even realizing it.

Found a solid outfit to help me with the direct rollover. The process itself was surprisingly smooth, much less hassle than I expected. Moved roughly $120k into physical gold held in a depository – specifically allocated, which was a non-negotiable for me. Seeing that account statement finally reflect some tangible assets, not just numbers on a screen, honestly gave me a sense of peace. Anyone else felt that way after making the jump?

Still have a good chunk in my current 401k, and diversified across a few other places, but having that gold base just feels right. Especially living here in Lexington, you see a lot of folks who appreciate things built to last. Now if only I could figure out how to get a barrel of premium aged bourbon into an IRA... (kidding, mostly!). But seriously, has anyone had any surprises, positive or negative, after their Gold IRA rollover?

Awesome, congrats on getting it done! It's definitely a relief to finally check those things off the list. Quick question out of genuine curiosity: when you say "legacy 401k from a previous gig," was it a traditional 401k or a Roth? And did that play into your decision at all for the Gold IRA?

Totally get this! I did something similar with an old 403b from my teaching days. The market just felt too wild and that money had been sitting there for years doing... well, not much exciting. Having some of it in actual physical gold just feels way more secure, especially with all the talk of inflation right now. Glad you finally got around to it!

Glad you're feeling good about the move! While I totally get the appeal of gold as a hedge against volatility, it's worth remembering that it doesn't generate income or dividends like some other assets. Just something to keep in mind for the long haul. Hope it works out well for you!

Congrats on getting that done! It's such a good feeling to finally tackle those financial tasks you've been putting off.

One thing I found super helpful after my rollover was setting up price alerts for the metals I hold. That way, I don't have to constantly check, but I'm still in the loop if there's a significant swing. Most gold IRA companies or even general precious metal sites offer this feature. Just a thought!

Totally agree, sounds like a smart move! I did something similar a few months ago with about half my old SEP IRA. The peace of mind alone is worth it, especially with everything going on. Nice job getting it done!
