Finally pulled the trigger on a Gold IRA rollover, some thoughts/questions

So after sitting on the sidelines for a while, I finally initiated a direct rollover from my old 401(k) into a self-directed Gold IRA. It was roughly $350k that was just…sitting there, doing nothing particularly exciting in a standard diversified fund. After seeing how things are trending globally and especially with some of the tech layoffs here in SF, I just felt a strong need to diversify beyond paper assets. My financial advisor (who, bless her heart, really tried to convince me otherwise) finally came around to the idea once I showed her some of the research I'd done on historical gold performance during inflationary periods.
The actual process wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I went with Augusta Precious Metals after reading a ton of reviews here and elsewhere. Their customer service was pretty solid, walking me through all the paperwork with the custodian and the actual metals buying process. Had a few minor hiccups with the old 401(k) administrator dragging their feet on the funds transfer, but Augusta followed up diligently. Took about 3 weeks from start to finish to see the metals officially in the depository, which felt like an eternity, but I hear that's actually pretty quick for these things.
I ended up allocating about 70% to gold American Eagles and 30% to Canadian Maple Leafs. Felt like a good mix of recognizable bullion with a touch of international diversification, even if it's all physical. Now that it's done, I'm feeling a lot more...secure, for lack of a better word. It's not about immediate returns for me; it's about wealth preservation and having a tangible asset outside the traditional financial system, especially with all the digital currency buzz. What are others' experiences with the timelines for their rollovers? Did anyone find particular types of gold/silver perform better in their IRAs?
Also, completely unrelated but somewhat related: I'm curious if anyone has gone through the process of taking distributions from their Gold IRA down the line. I'm obviously a ways off from retirement age, but understanding the liquidity and conversion back to cash is something that's always in the back of my mind. Any headaches there, or is it as smooth as the initial setup?
