You guys, I am SO relieved and excited to share this! After what feels like years of trying to get my husband to serious about diversifying our retirement, he finally agreed to move some of his 401k into a Gold IRA. We’ve been married for over 25 years, and bless his heart, he's always been a bit… traditional with finances. Stocks, bonds, a bit of real estate here and there. Nothing wrong with that, but with everything going on in the world, I just couldn't shake this feeling that we needed something more tangible, something real.
I grew up on a farm here near Kansas City, and my dad always said, "Land and gold, honey, those are the things that'll always hold their worth." That stuck with me. For the last two years, I’ve been chipping away at him, sending articles, talking about inflation, showing him historical charts. He just kept saying, "It's too complicated," or "Our guy handles it." But recently, with all the talk about the dollar and these interest rate hikes, he started listening a bit more intently. I think seeing his own portfolio wobble a bit was a wake-up call.
What really seemed to seal the deal was a story I read about someone who had a significant portion of their wealth in precious metals during the 2008 crash. It wasn't just about making money, but about preserving what they had worked so hard for. I showed him how even a small allocation – we’re looking at moving about $70,000 to start – could act as a hedge, a kind of insurance policy for the rest of our investments. I emphasized that we weren't cashing out everything, just balancing things out. We don’t have a massive portfolio, probably in the low six figures, so $70k feels like a good, solid chunk.
We're just beginning the process with a company I've researched pretty thoroughly, but honestly, just having him say "Okay, let's do this" has lifted such a weight off my shoulders. It feels like we're finally taking control and protecting our future in a way that aligns with my belief in real, physical assets. Has anyone else had to work this hard to convince their spouse? Any advice for someone just getting started with the transfer process?
