Finally got my Gold IRA set up - feels good, man.

Just wanted to share a small win for anyone else out there that's been thinking about diversifying their retirement. I finally pulled the trigger and rolled over a portion of my government 401(k) into a Gold IRA. I’ve been sitting on the fence for about a year, probably like many of you, worried about inflation and just the general instability of the market. My pension is solid, but I really wanted that extra cushion, especially as I get closer to retirement age. I'm based here in Albuquerque, and honestly, seeing housing prices keep climbing makes me feel like I need to protect every dollar I can.
I ended up moving about $60k of my 401(k) – it wasn't the whole thing, but a significant chunk that felt right for my risk tolerance. The process itself was surprisingly straightforward. I picked a company (won't name them specifically here, but happy to DM if anyone wants to know who I went with) and they basically handled all the paperwork. It was a 401(k) to IRA rollover, so no taxes hit, which was a huge relief. They helped me pick out some common gold bullion coins and bars; nothing exotic, just the basics I felt comfortable with. Knowing it's held in a secure depository is a definite peace of mind.
Honestly, the biggest feeling right now is just relief. It's not about trying to get rich quick, it's really about preserving what I've worked so hard for. I just turned 55, and the thought of another market crash wiping out chunks of my savings is pretty terrifying. This gold allocation feels like a solid hedge. Has anyone else done something similar recently? How much of your portfolio did you decide to allocate? Curious to hear others’ experiences, especially from those who've been in it a bit longer.
