Just finished up the whole 401k to Gold IRA rollover, and honestly, feeling a mix of relief and a little bit of exhaustion from all the paperwork. For years, I'd been thinking about it, especially with all the volatility lately, and finally pulled the trigger. Had about $700k in my old 401k from the logistics company here in Memphis, and with my kids getting older and thinking about stepping back in a few years, protecting that capital became a huge priority. The market just feels... wobbly, you know?
The biggest hurdle was definitely figuring out which custodian and precious metals dealer to go with. Felt like I was drowning in information for a while there; everyone promises the moon. Eventually settled on one that had decent reviews for 24/7 client support and transparent fees, which was critical for me. I didn't want any surprises. The actual transfer process itself was way more straightforward than I anticipated once I had all the accounts set up, but getting to that point took a minute. Had to call my old 401k administrator a few times to get the right forms. Seriously, why do they make it so arcane?
Ended up allocating about 80% of that rollover into gold bullion, mostly American Gold Eagles and Canadian Gold Maples. Thought about some silver, but for this specific fund, I wanted that pure, historical stability that gold offers. The remaining 20% is still in some more traditional investments, just to keep a little liquidity and growth potential. My advisor kept pushing for more equities, but I just don't have the stomach for those wild swings right now. It's about wealth preservation for me at this stage, not aggressive growth.
Anyone else here go through a big rollover recently? What was your experience like? Any tips for someone who's just gotten through it? I’m feeling pretty good about the decision long-term, but definitely curious about others' journeys and if there are any post-rollover considerations I should be thinking about that aren't immediately obvious.
