Finally got my 401k into gold, feeling good about 2024

Just wanted to share my recent experience diversifying my retirement. After watching the market volatility and all the economic uncertainty, I finally pulled the trigger and moved a good chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. I'm a military retiree, based out of San Diego, and frankly, financial security is paramount for me and my family. Had about $350k in that old 401k from my last civilian job, and decided to roll over about $100k of it into physical gold.
The whole process was actually a lot smoother than I anticipated. I spent a solid month researching different custodians and what type of gold to go with. Ended up going with American Gold Eagle coins – just felt more tangible and familiar, you know? The setup itself took a few weeks, mostly just paperwork and coordination between the old 401k administrator and the new Gold IRA custodian. My initial thought was to do closer to $150k, but decided to hold back a bit to see how things shake out over the next few months. Still got plenty in traditional investments, but this just feels like a smarter hedge.
Honestly, the peace of mind is worth it alone. With everything going on globally, having a portion of my retirement tied to something as historically stable as gold just makes me sleep a little better at night. I'm not looking to get rich overnight with this, just preserving capital and protecting against inflation. My goal is to add another $50k in the next year if the economic indicators keep pointing towards more turbulence.
Anyone else in a similar boat, or recently made a similar move? What were your deciding factors for diversifying into precious metals? And for those who have had Gold IRAs for a while, anything you wish you knew when you first started?
