Honestly, for years there was this low-level hum of anxiety about my retirement accounts. I built my tech company from scratch, sold it for a nice chunk in 2018, and suddenly had this 401k that felt exposed to every market sneeze. Living in Dublin, you see a lot of folks doing well, but also a lot of uncertainty. I kept thinking about the 2008 crash and how quickly paper wealth can disappear.
Around 2019, after a lot of research, I pulled the trigger and rolled over about $1.8 million of my 401k into a Gold IRA. Getting through the paperwork and finding the right custodian was a bit of a maze, not gonna lie. There were definitely some moments I second-guessed myself, especially when the market was soaring. Friends would ask what I was doing, why I was "missing out" on gains. But I stuck to my conviction: I wanted real, tangible assets.
Fast forward to today, and that feeling of relief is immense. With all the economic jitters, inflation, and global instability, seeing that physical gold account perform exactly as an inflation hedge and safe haven should… it’s what lets me sleep at night. That $1.8M has appreciated nicely, but more importantly, it’s maintained its purchasing power and then some. It’s not about getting rich quick, it’s about preserving what I worked damn hard for.
Anyone else out there feel that sense of calm after making a similar move? What were your biggest motivators and how long have you been holding? I'm curious to hear other long-term perspectives.
