Honestly, when I first rolled over a chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA back in late 2019, I was a bundle of nerves. I'd been hearing all the buzz from friends and seen some ads, and as a nurse here in Seattle, I'm usually pretty cautious with my money. My husband and I were talking about retirement security, and with everything going on in the world, the idea of having something tangible felt... right. We ended up moving about $60,000 of that old 401k, opting for mostly American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maples.
The first year or so, it felt a bit stagnant. Gold had its ups and downs, but it wasn't the rocket ship some people made it out to be. There were times I honestly wondered if I’d made the right decision, especially seeing the stock market doing its thing. But my advisor kept reminding me of the long game and the diversification aspect, and I just kept telling myself this was for security, not to get rich quick. I wasn't looking to day trade, I was looking for peace of mind heading into retirement.
Fast forward to now, and I’m genuinely breathing a sigh of relief, if not outright celebrating a bit!
I just got my latest statement, and that initial $60k is sitting pretty close to $85k! It's not just the monetary gain, though that's obviously fantastic. It's the feeling of confidence, knowing that a significant portion of our retirement savings is protected from the wild swings of the market. And with everything going on in the world right now, that security feels more valuable than ever. It's not our entire portfolio, of course, but it's a solid cornerstone.Anyone else feeling this way about their gold investments lately? Especially those of you who did a rollover around the same time? What percentages are you seeing? I'm curious if my experience is pretty standard or if I just got lucky with my timing. It’s definitely making me consider adding a bit more to it in the future, maybe from some of our newer contributions.
