Finally feeling good about my Gold IRA - a small win after years

Just wanted to share a little bit of a win here, hoping it resonates with some of you or at least gets some discussion going. I've had a decent chunk of my retirement savings in a Gold IRA for a while now, probably around 15-20% of my total portfolio, which is currently sitting in the high 6-figures. I started this whole thing maybe 8 or 9 years ago, back when the dairy industry here in Wisconsin was a little more predictable and I still had some good years left before retirement. For a long time, it felt like I was just holding onto this gold as a hedge, feeling kinda "meh" about the returns compared to other parts of my portfolio.
But man, these last couple of years, with all the uncertainty swirling around – inflation, whatever's going on overseas – it’s a totally different story. Looking at my statements, that gold portion has really been holding its own, and in some metrics, outperforming other assets that I thought were rock-solid. It’s not about getting rich quick, that was never the play, but seeing that stability and even growth when other things are getting hammered? It’s a huge relief. Honestly, it’s made me feel a lot more confident about having that physical asset backing up my retirement.
My biggest concern now is really just planning for the RMDs when I finally pull the plug in a few years. It's something I’ve been looking into more seriously. If any of you have successfully navigated taking distributions from your Gold IRA, I’d love to hear your experiences. Especially interested if anyone has used the RMD Calculator at goldirablueprint.com – I played around with it a bit and it seems pretty straightforward, but always good to get real-world feedback. What were the logistical challenges? Did you take in-kind distributions or sell off chunks? Any tax surprises?
