You guys, I finally did it! After what feels like years of talking his ear off about diversification, inflation, and market volatility, my husband is actually on board with my Gold IRA. Honestly, I was starting to think it would never happen. He's always been a "traditional stocks and bonds" kind of guy, super focused on tech and S&P 500. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but with everything going on globally and even here closer to home, I just felt really uneasy having all our eggs in one basket.
I started my Gold IRA about two years ago, just a small initial rollover of about $50k from an old 401k. It's grown nicely since then, now sitting comfortably around $80k. I tried showing him the charts, comparing it to our other investments, even talking about the historical value of gold during economic downturns. He'd nod, say "That's interesting," and then go back to checking his Nasdaq portfolio. I kept telling him, especially living down here in El Paso, with views of Juarez from our patio, you see firsthand how rapidly things can shift. The importance of having something tangible, something that transcends borders and political systems, it just resonates differently when it's right there.
What finally clicked, I think, was when I showed him the performance of our gold holdings during the recent bank volatility earlier this year. While some of our other assets were taking a hit or just treading water, my gold portion was steadily climbing. I didn't rub it in, just casually pointed it out. Then, our friend who runs an import/export business had some major headaches with currency fluctuations for a big shipment – that really opened his eyes to how unpredictable global markets can be. He finally sat down with me this past weekend, looked through all my statements, asked a ton of questions about the custodian, fees, the whole nine yards. By the end of the conversation, he was nodding and saying, "Okay, I get it. This makes sense for a portion of our portfolio."
We're looking at rolling over about $100k from one of his older retirement accounts into physical gold and maybe even some silver bars this time. I'm so relieved we're finally on the same page with this. Has anyone else had to convince a skeptical spouse? What finally got through to them?
