Finally caved and opened a Gold IRA after the wife wore me down - no regrets!

- •Diversified, or so I thought.

Okay, so I’ve been sitting on this for a bit, but wanted to share my Gold IRA journey, mainly because my wife deserves all the credit (and maybe a little bit of playful ribbing). I’ve been running my tourism business down here in Savannah for a good 15 years now, seen a few economic storms roll in and out, and always considered myself pretty savvy with our investments. Most of our 200k-ish portfolio was in pretty standard stuff – stocks, some real estate exposure. Diversified, or so I thought.
My wife, bless her persistent heart, started reading up on gold last year. Everywhere I turned, she was sending me articles, YouTube videos of talking heads, all advocating for physical gold in an IRA. I'm talking regular dinner table conversations turning into full-blown debates about inflation, market volatility, and the "safe haven" argument. I humored her at first, but after about six months of this, she presented me with a fully-researched proposal: a Gold IRA with a reputable custodian, talking about percentages and historical performance. She even had the forms pulled up!
Honestly? I was skeptical. Felt a bit like a boomer move, putting physical stuff in a retirement account. But, a happy wife equals a happy life, and given how much effort she’d put in, I agreed to put about 10-15% of our retirement savings into it. We ended up converting around $25,000 from an existing IRA. That was back in late 2022, and with everything that's happened since then, I gotta say, she was absolutely right. Seeing that part of our portfolio hold steady, and even gain a little, while some of my other holdings have been a bit of a rollercoaster, has been a huge relief.
It’s really changed my perspective on truly diversifying our assets, especially running a business that's so susceptible to economic downturns. It makes me wonder, for those of you who were on the fence or even against the idea, what finally pushed you over to opening a Gold IRA? Was it a spouse, a market event, or just a slow realization? Looking to hear some other stories!
