Just wanted to share a mini-success story, mostly for anyone feeling a little antsy about their precious metal holdings. I rolled over an old 403(b) into a Gold IRA back in 2018 – about $80k at the time, all physical gold held in a depository. I'm a government employee here in Albuquerque, so between my pension and some other investments, this was always meant to be a supplemental, long-term thing, diversifying away from just paper assets.
Fast forward to today, after watching the market swing and gold do its thing, I decided to take a little off the top. Not cashing out, just rebalancing. I sold about $15k worth of my gold to put towards some home improvements – finally getting that kitchen remodel done that my wife has been dreaming about! It felt pretty great seeing that money come through and knowing it was built on something so tangible. The process was straightforward with my custodian, which was a relief. Honestly, there were times those last few years where I wondered if I'd done the right thing, especially when gold was flat, but I stuck with it.
I still have a good chunk in there, probably around $95k now, and plan to keep it for the long haul. It's really helped me sleep better at night knowing a portion of my retirement isn't just tied to the stock market's whims. Plus, as a government worker, I appreciate having that extra layer of security beyond my pension. Anyone else here recently take advantage of their gains? Or perhaps rebalanced their portfolio a bit? Curious to hear others' experiences with actually pulling some money out of their Gold IRA.
