After months of going back and forth, I finally pulled the trigger on rolling over a significant chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. Had about $800k sitting there from a previous gig I left a few years back. My current development projects are keeping me plenty busy, but the market's got me feeling jumpy, especially with all the macro stuff happening. Between inflation being sticky and the constant talk of recession, I just couldn't stomach having that much exposure in traditional stocks anymore. The thought of another 2008-level correction just sitting there unhedged was really starting to gnaw at me.
My accountant, who's usually pretty conservative, actually floated the idea of a Gold IRA a while back, knowing I hold a lot of physical metal already. I've got a decent stack at home and a few safe deposit boxes with some heavier bars, so gold isn't new to me. The process itself was surprisingly straightforward, though it took a little longer than I anticipated – about three weeks from first call to funding. The custodian they hooked me up with was professional, and the transfer agent from the old 401k really didn't put up much of a fight, which was a relief. I opted for a mix of American Gold Eagles and Canadian Maple Leafs for the IRA – just prefer the government-backed coins for better liquidity if I ever need it down the road. Stored it in a COMEX-approved vault, naturally, not in my Aspen office.
Now, I know some folks on here will say it's too late, or that I should've done it years ago. Believe me, I've heard it all. But honestly, the peace of mind having that portion of my portfolio insulated from market volatility is worth its weight in... well, gold. My overall portfolio is still heavily diversified, with plenty in real estate and other ventures, so this isn't a "betting it all on gold" move. It's more about hedging and capital preservation for a portion of my retirement savings that I don't need access to for a long time. Anyone else here made a similar move recently? What were your experiences with the custodian and coin selection?
