Okay, so I finally pulled the trigger on rolling over part of my old 401k into a gold IRA. Been mulling this over for a while, especially with all the market volatility lately. My financial advisor back in Denver (small business owner here, so gotta keep an eye on things!) suggested it, and it just made sense to diversify a bit more. I’m only moving about $75k over, not my whole retirement fund, but it still feels like a big step. The company I went with said 2-3 weeks for the whole direct trustee-to-trustee transfer process for the funds, and then another week or so for the actual physical gold to get to the vault.
It's been exactly two weeks today since I initiated everything, and I'm honestly a bit antsy. I know it's probably standard, but every day I check my accounts, and it's just... crickets. The money hasn't officially left my old 401k yet. Part of me is just super excited to see that gold in my name, stored away, knowing it's not tied directly to the stock market's daily roller coaster. The other part is like, where’s my money?! It’s a good chunk for me, and I just want to see it settled.
For those of you who’ve done a 401k to gold IRA rollover before, what was your actual timeline like? Did it really take the full 3-4 weeks, or even longer sometimes? Any tips for someone who’s impatiently waiting? Should I be calling my old 401k provider directly, or just trust the new gold IRA company to handle the chase? Just looking for some shared experiences or advice to calm my nerves a bit.
