Alright, diving into the Gold IRA world, and the custodian choice is feeling a bit overwhelming. I’ve been doing my due diligence on a couple of places, specifically Equity Trust and Preferred Trust Company. My dad set up his with some outfit back in the 90s that isn't really on the radar anymore, and frankly, I want something a bit more modern and communicative.

My portfolio is sitting around the $400k mark right now, mostly inherited timberland trusts that I’m slowly diversifying out of (Spokane lumber isn't what it used to be, let me tell you). Gold just feels like the smart play for generational wealth preservation, especially with all the noise out there. I’m looking for a custodian that’s rock solid, affordable fee-wise for that scale, and has a decent online portal. I don't want to be making phone calls every time I need to check something simple. Good customer service is obviously key too; I hate feeling like I’m talking to a brick wall.

Has anyone here had direct experience with either Equity Trust or Preferred Trust? What were your pros and cons? Were the fees transparent? Any hidden charges that snuck up on you? Or are there other custodians you absolutely swear by for a Gold IRA in this kind of portfolio range? I’m all ears for recommendations or warnings. Just trying to make the best long-term decision here, appreciate any insight!

I actually went with Equity Trust for my rollover last year, about 180k from an old 401k. One thing that really helped me during my due diligence was the IRA Financial Group's comparison tool for custodians. It breaks down fees and services in a pretty clear way, which was super useful given how opaque some of these companies can be. Florida-based, so I appreciate transparency.

Oh man, I hear you. The custodian thing was a hurdle for me too. I actually went with Equity Trust for my Gold IRA a few years back. So far, so good. No major complaints – the setup was smoother than I expected, and their customer service has been decent when I've had little questions. Haven't dealt with Preferred Trust, but hopefully, someone else here has info on them!

Hey, interesting you mention Preferred Trust. I've been looking into them too. When you say "due diligence," what kind of things have you been digging into specifically with Preferred? Like, fees, storage options, or something else?

Hey, cool you're looking into Gold IRAs! Hope you find what you need. Just wanted to throw out there, sometimes focusing *too* much on the custodian can be a bit of a rabbit hole. While they're obviously important, a lot of their services are pretty standardized. Have you already nailed down which dealer you're thinking of using for the actual metals? Often, they'll have preferred custodians they work with regularly, which can streamline the whole process a lot.

My buddy went with a custodian his dealer recommended and had a super smooth experience, whereas I spent ages comparing custodians and honestly, the difference ended up being pretty negligible for me. Might be worth considering the whole package deal!

I'm still pretty new to the Gold IRA world myself, about a year in with my holdings topping out around $300k now. I used Augusta Precious Metals to get set up, and they pointed me to Equity Trust. Fees seem "fine," but I'm legit curious if the grass is greener. Anyone here from Salt Lake City using Preferred Trust? Would love a local's perspective on their storage setup or if it just feels more responsive.
