Agree with the general sentiment here on Engelhards. I picked up a few 10oz bars about 5 years ago, paid a slight premium over other generic silver at the local coin shop here in SLC, but nothing crazy. Today, those same bars are commanding an even higher premium, enough to make a noticeable difference in my portfolio compared to the run-of-the-mill buffalo rounds I also bought around the same time. While it's not a huge part of my holdings, recognizing that numismatic appeal within a physical precious metals strategy can definitely add some unexpected upside.

Interesting to see Engelhard mentioned. I've found that **SilverPrice.org** has been a surprisingly handy tool for tracking historical prices on specific bars and rounds, not just general spot. Helps me gauge if I'm even close to a decent entry point when I see something pop up from my local Savannah dealer. Good to have that extra data before pulling the trigger.

Engelhard bars are definitely classics, still holding some of the best premiums in the secondary market because of their reputation. Back in '17, I traded out some of my 10oz JM bars for a stack of older Engelhard P-reverse 100oz pours – got a pretty sweet deal on the premiums given the scarcity. Those are just rock-solid, tactile wealth.

Engelhard bars are a classic, no doubt. I picked up a few of those 10oz bars back in the late 90s when silver was dirt cheap, like $5-6 an ounce. Wish I'd bought a truckload then – they've got that vintage appeal now, plus the intrinsic value. Definitely not selling mine anytime soon.

Man, seeing these Engelhard bars brings back some memories. I remember staring at the spot price charts on my old flip phone back in '09 from my buddy's dingy apartment in Tremont, convinced the whole economy was going to ramen noodles. Ended up sinking a decent chunk of what little savings I had into a few 100oz Engelhards through a local dealer up near Parma. My wife – girlfriend at the time – thought I was nuts, said I was hoarding shiny rocks when we needed a new couch. Fast forward to today, sitting on a solid portfolio including a significant Gold IRA, and those bars were literally the foundation that built my confidence in precious metals. She still brings up the couch, but now she winks when she does it.

My Gold IRA journey has been going well enough, but I've always found the deep dives into vintage silver bars, especially Engelhard, a bit... overblown. I get the collector appeal for some, but for anyone primarily focused on wealth preservation or *actual* investment growth, paying significant premiums for specific pours or dates on a piece of silver bullion just feels like a distraction. It's still silver, folks. The premium doesn't magically make it perform better than a generic bar when the spot price moves. Save the extra cash and buy more ounces of whatever's cheapest unless you're legitimately collecting.

You know, I remember chasing Engelhards back in the day, probably 2010 or so. Everyone swore they were the next big thing for premiums. I picked up a few at a local coin show here in Albuquerque for just a buck over spot. Honestly, they were nice, very clean, but when I went to sell them a few years later, those premiums just weren't there anymore. My advice: buy the metal, not the hype. Premiums come and go, but the actual silver weight is what matters long-term.

I'm holding onto a couple of those Engelhard 10oz bars I picked up back in '08 when silver was still under $20. The premium's definitely there now, saw them going for close to $400 a pop recently, which is pretty wild considering what generic rounds go for. If you're looking to stack, sometimes those slightly less common bars, even not super rare like Engelhard, can give you a better exit later if you're patient and the market allows for premiums.

Honestly, I've always found the hype around Engelhard bars a bit overblown for a buy-and-hold strategy. While they certainly have collector appeal and a solid reputation, I lean towards more generic, lower-premium rounds and bars for my IRA contributions. Those extra percentages add up fast when you're talking about a significant portfolio. I'd rather have more ounces of silver than pay a premium for a specific name.

@Paul Hill - Good call on the Engelhards. I'm over in Omaha, and it's tough to find solid deals like that around here sometimes. Speaking of premiums and finding value, I've found it really helpful to use **JM Bullion's spot price tracker integrated into their "Premium over Spot" tool**. It's not perfect, but it gives a decent benchmark to see if what my local shop is quoting is remotely fair, especially on the more common stuff like 10oz bars. Keeps me from getting completely hosed.

You know, Engelhard bars are solid, literally. I picked up a few 10oz bars back in '16 when silver was dipping under $18. Still holding onto them. They've got that classic appeal too – feels like you're holding a piece of history, not just metal. Just confirm the serial numbers and look for the eagle hallmark if you're buying off the secondary market.

@Diane Bailey - Interesting on SilverPrice.org; I've used some of those sites myself, though honestly, I mostly just keep an eye on Kitco for general spot. Call me old school, but my Engelhard stuff from the 80s was bought with the intention of never tracking it day-to-day. It’s part of my "digital detox" portion of the portfolio. Sometimes I wonder if all this minute-by-minute tracking of *every single piece* actually defeats the purpose of holding physical metals for long-term stability. Isn't part of the psychological advantage losing the urge to constantly check? Just a thought from my Nashville armchair.

@Linda Taylor Yeah, I hear you on the Engelhard stuff. When I first started looking into a Gold IRA a few years back, I got so much conflicting info, especially about what's "investable" vs. "collectible." Honestly, I almost threw in the towel after a couple of really pushy sales demos from other companies. What made me stick with *GIRAB* was that it actually explained the differences without trying to upsell me on some obscure bar. I'm mainly a gold guy myself – diversified mostly into Eagles and some Buffalos, about $75k in there now – but understanding the nuances around things like Engelhard for silver collectors was actually pretty useful context for understanding the broader market psychology. I'm in Denver, and finding a decent local dealer who actually knows their stuff, rather than just pushing whatever has the highest premium, was a whole journey in itself.

Genuinely curious β€” has anyone here actually tried to liquidate from their gold IRA? How smooth was that process?

@Dorothy Lopez Those Engelhard bars are definitely beautiful, and it's always great to see a nice premium on a savvy '08 pickup. But honestly, as much as we all love the "stacker" appeal, sometimes I wonder if chasing those specialized premiums on *physical* silver inside an IRA defeats a bit of the purpose. Liquidity and ease of direct market value conversion should be paramount when the time comes to pull from a tax-advantaged account, no? I'd rather have straightforward, recognizable bullion with minimal question marks.

Honestly, I thought Engelhard was just a nostalgic thing for older collectors, but after seeing a few of these in person, the quality really does speak for itself. I picked up a couple hundred ounces when silver dipped back in late 2022, mostly for the history, but they've been nice stackers. Definitely agree they carry a bit of a premium, but I don't regret it given the brand recognition.

@Steven Mitchell Those Engelhards are classics. I actually picked up a few of those 100oz bars back then, wish I'd held onto more of the JM 100oz pours though. Remember my broker at the time tried to talk me out of silver entirely, said it was too volatile. Glad I trusted my gut and loaded up anyway – that initial allocation has performed exceptionally well over the long haul.

Got a question about these bars. I'm just getting into the physical side and looking at a few options. Are Engelhard bars typically easier to liquidate than, say, a generic 10oz bar, or is the premium mostly for collectors? Trying to figure out if it's worth paying a bit more upfront from a Memphis dealer I was checking out.

@Joseph Harris - Kitco's my daily go-to for spot price, too, always has been. But man, talking Engelhard takes me back. I remember back in '08, when the market was tanking hard and everyone around me in KC was panicking about their 401ks, I was looking at my small pile of Engelhards thinking "at least this is tangible." Ended up selling a few of those smaller 1oz bars to cover some unexpected car repairs that year, and honestly, the premium held up way better than I expected. That was a big part of what got me seriously looking into a Gold IRA a few years later.

@Paul Hill That's interesting about Engelhards. I'm just starting on my gold IRA journey from Birmingham, and honestly, the premium stuff like Engelhard is confusing when I'm still trying to figure out the basics like storage and custodian fees. Are these more for collectors, or do they have real intrinsic value over generic bars for an IRA?

Good to see someone still bringing up Engelhard. I picked up a few of those 100oz bars back in '08 when prices dipped hard, paid around $18 an ounce after premiums. They're still sitting in my vault, a nice chunk of my physical holdings. I've always preferred the classic refiners for long-term holds, even if the premiums aren't always the absolute lowest. You want something recognized, easily verifiable, when it comes time to liquidate years down the line.

I bought a few Engelhard 10oz bars back in 2021 when silver was having a bit of a moment. Paid a small premium then, maybe $2-3 over spot per ounce. In hindsight, I could've waited, but they're solid bars. Just checked a few dealer sites and looks like the premium is still pretty consistent. Good for long-term hold, but don't expect them to move like fractional gold if you're looking for big swings.

I honestly didn't think I'd find much value in another "gold investor" forum after some of the garbage I've sifted through, but the info on GIRAB has been surprisingly solid. On the Engelhard bars, I picked up five 10oz bars back in '16 for what felt like a steal at the time – think it was around $17.50/oz. They've been a nice anchor for the physical portion of my portfolio here in Portland and definitely held their value better than some of my more speculative plays.
