I've been stacking gold for a good few decades now, mostly American Eagles, but the Buffalo's always had a certain appeal to me. Especially since retiring from the energy sector out here in Houston a few years back, I’ve had even more time to dive into this stuff. My portfolio, sitting pretty in that $1-5 million range, is heavily weighted towards precious metals, and for good reason after what I’ve seen through the years.
I’ve always loved the fractional options with the Eagles, and that 22k durability makes me feel a bit better about handling them without immediately thinking I’ve dinged their value. They’re classic, recognizable, and I’ve never had trouble with premiums on the buy or sell side. But then you’ve got the Buffalos. That 24k pure gold... it’s just something else, isn't it? The design is iconic too, a true representation of American coinage. I’ve been eyeing some more of them lately, thinking of diversifying my holdings a bit further into the pure stuff.
My Gold IRA is mostly Eagles right now, probably 70/30 in favor of them over other coins. I’m starting to wonder if I should be shifting that balance. Is the purity of the Buffalo really that much of an advantage for long-term holding, or does the slight alloy in the Eagle provide peace of mind that outweighs the 24k purity? I know some folks swear by the purest gold possible, seeing it as more universally accepted in a crisis, while others value the perceived durability of the Eagle.
What are you all holding in your personal stacks and Gold IRAs? Any strong opinions on why one is superior to the other for a substantial long-term investment? I even came across this Gold IRA Quiz recently – might be worth checking out if you're new to the Gold IRA game or just want to refine your strategy. It was a good refresher for me on some of the nuances. Seriously curious to hear your insights, especially from those who’ve been in this game as long as I have.
