Hey everyone,
Daniel Wright here, chiming in from Austin. So, I’ve been heavily into Gold IRAs for about five years now, primarily as a hedge against the kind of market swings that make my tech investments feel like a rollercoaster. I started loading up big after seeing some pretty wild swings with my portfolio back in 2018 (down almost 20% that year before a rebound, yikes!). My gold holdings now sit comfortably between the $500k-$1m mark, so I’ve definitely had some skin in the game when it comes to choosing what physical gold to hold in my IRA.
One of the biggest internal debates I had when I first got started, and honestly still occasionally revisit, is the whole American Eagle vs. American Buffalo showdown. For my IRA, I went almost exclusively with Buffalos early on. My thinking was pure and simple: purity. The .9999 fine gold just felt… cleaner, more direct. I bought into the idea that in a truly catastrophic scenario, the purer gold would be more universally accepted and more easily divisible. Looking back, I probably overthought that a bit, but it gave me peace of mind as I was first deploying significant capital. I remember picking up 50 Buffalos in one go, felt pretty good about that decision at the time.
However, over the last couple of years, I’ve actually diversified a bit and added a decent chunk of Gold Eagles to my holdings, probably around 20-25% of my physical gold is now Eagles. Why the change of heart? Honestly, it came down to liquidity and recognition. While the Buffalos are beautiful and pure, the Eagles, with that small copper/silver alloy, are just so widely recognized and traded. I’ve heard countless stories of Eagles being easier to offload if needed, potentially with a slightly tighter spread. Plus, that added durability is a nice bonus; I’m not exactly tossing them around, but the thought of a slightly more resilient coin is appealing. I'm curious, for those of you with significant gold holdings in your IRAs, what drove your initial choices between these two titans? And have any of you, like me, diversified your holdings over time? Would love to hear some other perspectives!
