Been seeing a lot of back and forth lately on the perennial Eagles vs. Buffalos debate, especially for those of us holding in an IRA. As someone with a pretty substantial metals allocation – easily 7 figures in physical, with a decent chunk of it in a Gold IRA – I thought I'd throw my two cents in, based on my own experience down here in Palm Beach.
For me, it has always been about the Buffalos. And honestly, it boils down to the purity. That .9999 fine gold just sits better with me for long-term wealth preservation. I know the Eagles have that copper alloy for durability, and I get the argument for collectibility, but when you're looking at metals as a hedge against… well, everything… I want the purest gold value I can get. Doesn't mean I don't own some Eagles – I absolutely do, primarily in smaller denominations for potential bartering down the line if things really go sideways, but the bulk of my ounces are Buffalo.
Funny story: My primary custodian years ago, when I was first building out my IRA after I sold my company, actually tried to steer me almost exclusively into Eagles. Their pitch was all about the "brand recognition" and "liquidity." I pushed back, gently reminding them that for someone like me, who's not looking to flip these things next Tuesday, liquidity isn't the primary driver. It's about preserving purchasing power for my grandkids, frankly. Ended up going with a different firm that was more aligned with my purity preference. So, always make sure your custodian understands your goals, not just theirs.
Curious to hear from others: For those of you with significant holdings, especially in an IRA, what steered your decision? Was it purely premium, purity, or something else entirely? And have your views changed at all with market volatility over the past few years?
